About Us
Dancing Queer MX is a space dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community, born from the need to dance while breaking gender stereotypes on the dance floor.
Dance is essential for human beings, not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a way to connect with identity and emotions. Through body movement, people can communicate stories, feelings and experiences, connecting with others in a deep, non-verbal way. That makes dance a universal language, able to cross cultural and linguistic borders.
We realized that partner dances were missing one thing: breaking the barrier of having to dance only in socially assigned roles — “dancing like a woman” or “dancing like a man”. It has been a constant and ongoing struggle, as much as saying that pink is only for girls and blue is only for boys.
In our classes and activities you can dance the way that makes you happy, dress however you like, according to who you are and what you want to express.
Queer Salsa Level 1
Starting January 15
First level of social salsa with free roles. No experience or partner needed to start.
Social salsa with free roles: you decide which role to take and how expressive to be.
We define Queer Salsa as our own take on dancing while breaking the gender stereotype. In our classes you decide which role to take and how expressive you want to be.
SOCIAL SALSA, QUEER SALSA. It is what we dance at parties in Mexico; it looks like cumbia, but that is not entirely true even though they share a lot. In Mexico we call it social salsa. In these classes we cover salsa and cumbia side by side, so you can go out dancing with anyone.
Queer Bachata
Body technique, partner connection and musicality over a 4-beat base.
Bachata is a partner dance that combines body technique, partner connection and musicality over a 4-beat rhythmic base originally from the Dominican Republic. Unlike other social dances, bachata demands close body proximity and very precise physical communication between both roles.
And of course, in our classes we dance the Queer version!
On1 & On2 Salsa
Geometric precision on an imaginary lane, with multiple spins and New York style.
On 1 salsa is a fast, dynamic partner dance system designed to be danced inside a strict imaginary lane (a line on the floor). It stands out visually for its geometric precision, sudden accelerations, multiple spins and direct synchronization with the first strong beat of the music.
An On 2 salsa class (popularly known as New York Style or Mambo Style) teaches you to dance salsa keeping a straight lane while marking the break step on the second beat of the music.
Unlike On 1, On 2 prioritizes an organic connection with the deep percussion of salsa (the conguero's "tumbao" and the clave) and is known for its continuous, fluid and elegant movement.
Texan Cumbia
Cadence and partner dynamics from South Texas and northern Mexico.
A Texan cumbia class (or Tex-Mex cumbia) teaches the technique, cadence and partner dynamics of this genre from South Texas and northern Mexico, born from the meeting of traditional cumbia, norteño music and Mexican-American culture.
To understand the characteristic sound of Texan cumbia (fast tempo, driving electric bass, agile accordion and country/polka-style drums), these are essential references: Selena y los Dinos, Kumbia Kings / A.B. Quintanilla, La Mafia and Bobby Pulido, among others.
Pop Choreo
Jazz dance and pop attitude: academic technique with music-video energy.
A Pop Choreo / Jazz Dance class (or Pop Jazz choreography) is a formative, expressive session that fuses the academic technique of jazz dance — posture, turns, jumps and body isolation — with the style of pop idols like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. We also cover Spanish-language pop from Las Jeans and Fey to more modern, fun material like a good reggaeton, all blended with the visual trends, attitude and commercial feel of today's pop and music videos.

Ricardo García Luna
Director of Dancing Queer MX
How did I go from set designer to directing Dancing Queer MX?
Well, the story started quite a few years ago…
I first trained as a dancer and dance teacher at Ema Pulido's studio, back in late 1998 and the early 2000s. That was a long time ago!
I worked professionally as a dancer for about 8 years, performing jazz dance and teaching the same discipline; then my journey through theatre, set design, costume and lighting began.
I hold a degree in Set Design from the National School of Theatre Art (ENAT) of the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA), and for about 15 consecutive years I worked as a designer. I had the chance to work on more than 50 stage productions in Mexico and, on some occasions, at international festivals.
My work earned me awards and recognition as a designer and opened the door to cultural management projects, which laid the foundations for the creation of Dancing Queer MX.
Another fact about me: I also hold a master's degree in Design and Visual Communication from the Faculty of Arts and Design at UNAM. That training gave me the chance to live abroad for a while thanks to an artistic residency at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, in Spain. Living in Europe — in Madrid specifically — showed me the path of living with pride and with complete freedom to be who I am; it gave me wings to believe that things are possible.
Ricardo García Luna
But where does it all begin?
Dancing Queer MX comes from the need to dance again, to reconnect with my roots and with what has always driven me: dance. It all started with an idea with a very clear purpose: "Dance while breaking gender roles".
It is worth saying that we are pioneers in the country in offering the LGBTQ+ community a space to learn to dance with free roles. We started with one class and, over the years, we have increased our class offering and collaborated with different teachers and their dance projects; extraordinary teachers have passed through our classes sharing their knowledge.
But I will not tell you more; I will let you browse the site and see everything we have prepared for you: beyond classes we are a close, solid community, we have events, themed parties and more — and now we also have a bazar.
